KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Council of Churches (SCC) is not in favour of anyone being punished for their ignorance. However, it did not say whether that should extend to ignorance of the law, which the Court holds is no excuse.

“We believe that it is counter-productive to penalise ignorance with the law,” said SCC President Jerry Dusing.

“Humiliation would only breed more hatred. Rather, we trust that if the protesters were to understand the true meaning of the cross – regardless of whether they agree with the rest of the Christian faith or not – they would not perceive it as anything other than a symbol of the love and mercy of God.”

He pleaded for more dialogue to foster genuine understanding among Malaysians. “Unity in diversity is not a dream in Malaysia. It’s the reality and always has been. That does not mean that it is easy.”

It’s the constitutional duty of the authorities concerned to guarantee that non-Muslims can practice their religions in peace and harmony under the Federal Constitution.”
